Ep 69: SMILE TALK at the California Dental Association Convention at the Anaheim Convention Center

Salvador Gaytan:       It's time! SmileTalk is on the air, featuring the latest news and developments in dentistry, as well as other interesting topics that make people smile. I'm Salvador Gaytan, and I'm here with?

Dr. John Chao:          Dr. John Chao. We're going to bring you something that's very entertaining and interesting. We're reporting our experiences, our interviews and people we met at the California Dental Association's annual convention in Southern California, located at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Salvador Gaytan:       That's right. You and me, we went down there and we had a lot of fun, we interviewed some people and harassed them. Well, you harassed some people actually Dr. John, didn't you?

Dr. John Chao:          Yeah, I got some very nice people, they allowed us to interview them and reveal their secrets to us, so we're going to share it with our audience.

Salvador Gaytan:       I'm surprised security didn't throw you out Dr. John, you were really a rascal.

Dr. John Chao:          Well, Kary was real game and Dr. Brown was also, so that's actually one of my favorite interviews that day.

Salvador Gaytan:       That was one of your full -- and we'll get to that one. We're going to play, I don't know, maybe seven or eight of our favorite interviews, some different products, services and so forth. One of Dr. John's favorite interviews, he was trying to accost different people for some interesting interviews, and he found a couple of interesting characters, didn't you?

Dr. John Chao:          Yeah, actually I was first drawn to them because the ladies were very attractive, and they were laughing and having a good time, so I didn't feel that -- I felt comfortable just approaching them and asking one of them "What is the most embarrassing moment you've had in your career?" and she was able to share with us. So, we're going to let the audience listen to that.

Salvador Gaytan:       That's right, because we were there live interviewing, and but to just set this up at the Anaheim Convention Center. It was a huge, huge convention. Floors, I guess you could say football fields full of products and services, isn't that right, Dr. John?

Dr. John Chao:          It's people everywhere, but people were in very good mood. This is shopping time for dentists and their staff. This is when you go around have fun.

Salvador Gaytan:       And kind of a vacation time too for the staff.

Dr. John Chao:          Vacation time. They are paid when they are there. And those who are not paid, they enjoy being there.

Salvador Gaytan:       And some people came from -- they had to fly or drive to get down there, because it was in Southern California, this one, although they had one in Northern California too.

Dr. John Chao:          Yeah. Once a year, in September, they'll have it in Northern California. And we might go, it will be interesting to visit that too. But a lot of people were -- every year they look forward to going and this is the time when you renew old acquaintances, people you've met and your classmates from school, and there's different ways to meet different people. Of course, they have after-hours parties everywhere.

Salvador Gaytan:       Oh! Now, I get it, now I get it! So, you…

Dr. John Chao:          The fun starts when the interviews are over, Sal. You left too early, you see.

Salvador Gaytan:       No, no, no, I know why you told me, you said, "Sal, our interviews are done, you can go home now," because you snuck off to the after-party and you didn't want me seen in your party.

Dr. John Chao:          I went to one or two.

Salvador Gaytan:       Yeah, and I didn't get to go.

Dr. John Chao:          They were very nice to me, especially when I flashed my press pass. You see, you didn't make use of your press pass the way I did. You get into everything free.

Salvador Gaytan:       I see how it's going down there.

Dr. John Chao:          All refreshments, everything for…

Salvador Gaytan:       You dished me off at party time.

Dr. John Chao:          Well, you have to make it up to yourself at the next convention.

Salvador Gaytan:       That's right, that's right. Well, we have several interesting interviews, as Dr. John said, his favorite one was with the doctor, Dr. Brown and his assistant Amanda. You'll hear that one, a very nice interview. My favorite one, Dr. John, do you know what that one was?

Dr. John Chao:          There were so many, go ahead.

Salvador Gaytan:       Well, even though I'm not a specialist in dentistry like you are, but my favorite one was with the OASIS Dry Mouth Rinse and Spray, even though there were several interesting products, but I think I was more enchanted with the two lovely ladies that were giving the information. So, I think that was my favorite.

Dr. John Chao:          Well, they were extremely articulate.

Salvador Gaytan:       Yes, very articulate.

Dr. John Chao:          Pronunciation was just immaculate. I appreciate people, who are very articulate like yourself, on an impromptu basis say things in an interesting and informative way.

Salvador Gaytan:       Now, there was one other interesting -- we didn't interview this gentleman, but one other interesting aspect of the dental convention, which I was surprised that it was there, was the gentleman who was representing the sale of dental practices. You had a chit-chat with him, and you knew the gentleman.

Dr. John Chao:          When a dentist retires, there is value to what he's built up over the years. So, a new dentist wants to get started, he can actually get a pretty good start if he can take over an ongoing practice than if he started a new office without having had an established clientele.

Salvador Gaytan:       Yeah, because if a dentist like yourself or a dentist who is starting, buys a practice, they are buying those patients, right? Most likely the patients will come to them.

Dr. John Chao:          They're buying their goodwill that the other dentist had built up over the years.

Salvador Gaytan:       And they get the file, the patient files, everything.

Dr. John Chao:          Yeah, it's a nice way to get started, and I actually recommend it to new dentists, provided they have enough management skills to take over an office, because it's quite complicated and you can get eaten up by expenses very easily if you're not experienced and careful.

Salvador Gaytan:       Yeah, me being in real estate, I found it interesting, the sale of practices. I saw several fliers as to what different practices were going for. So, it was just interesting to see, whether it was $500,000 or $1 million or -- I found the prices interesting.

Dr. John Chao:          Well, did you know that these people who sell practices, have to have a real estate license?

Salvador Gaytan:       I did know that, yes.

Dr. John Chao:          Yeah. You can't even go into sale, because you're buying equipment, you're buying a business; you do have to go through escrow. It's very complicated.

Salvador Gaytan:       I could sell real estate, I can sell a dental practice. Do you want to sell your practice, Dr. John?

Dr. John Chao:          No.

[Laughter]

Salvador Gaytan:       Come on, man! Let's get a pretty penny for it.

Dr. John Chao:          There is no way. I'll work to my last day. I love what I do.

Salvador Gaytan:       I love it ladies and gentlemen. That's right. Well now, Dr. John, I have a trivia question for you. Are you ready?

Dr. John Chao:          Okay, there we go again. I hate these questions.

Salvador Gaytan:       Here we go again. Hey, but you got the last one though, about John Hancock…

Dr. John Chao:          Yeah, that one I did, that one I did.

Salvador Gaytan:       Being the first one to sign the Declaration of Independence. So, let's see, this is a gettable question here.

Dr. John Chao:          Gettable, is that good English?

[Laughter]

Salvador Gaytan:       I just phrased it. I pictured you reaching for the answer trying to get it. So, you know what, you can get this one Dr. John.

Dr. John Chao:          Okay, I'll give it a try.

Salvador Gaytan:       I was doing a little research before I went to the dental convention, the California dental convention, and I was looking at the different years it was held, and the places. They usually have one up in Northern California and Southern California like you mentioned, but there was one year in Northern California where the dental convention was canceled. What year was that?

Dr. John Chao:          No, I wouldn't know, I didn't keep track of that. However, I knew that they sometimes actually merge it if the national convention comes over, like the American Dental Association coming to San Francisco or LA. They just basically merge the two once in a while, I've heard that.

Salvador Gaytan:       This one was not merged, it was canceled last minute.

Dr. John Chao:          Earthquake, it was a big fire.

Salvador Gaytan:       No, but you're on the road, and it was within the last 10 years.

Dr. John Chao:          Within the last 10 years? Something happened up there.

Salvador Gaytan:       A big event happened that canceled it, in September.

Dr. John Chao:          Convention or something, some political convention?

Salvador Gaytan:       No, Dr. John, think big, what's the biggest thing that's happened in this country that could cancel…?

Dr. John Chao:          Oh, 9/11?

Salvador Gaytan:       9/11, that's right, September, 2001, it was canceled because of 9/11.

Dr. John Chao:          That's right, yeah, okay. I didn't realize that. Yeah, come to think of it, it did happen that way.

Salvador Gaytan:       So, that was a little trivia there for the convention.

Dr. John Chao:          Did you know that -- talking about conventions -- that dental conventions, although they are held in Las Vegas, they are never there during the weekends. Las Vegas will not permit the dental conventions to be held during a weekend, you know why?

Salvador Gaytan:       Why?

Dr. John Chao:          Because dentists don't spend money. They don't make money when they have dental conventions during the weekends.

Salvador Gaytan:       Because they don't gamble.

Dr. John Chao:          They're very conservative. So, they only can go from Monday to Thursday, then they will close shop on Thursday and go home.

Salvador Gaytan:       Oh my gosh. That's crazy.

Dr. John Chao:          You didn't know that, did you?

Salvador Gaytan:       No, I didn't know that.

Dr. John Chao:          Yeah, this is a little inside information. Dental conventions are never during the weekends in Las Vegas.

Salvador Gaytan:       That's interesting, that is fascinating.

Dr. John Chao:          But that doesn't mean you can't stay over, after Thursday is over.

Salvador Gaytan:       And for anyone just tuning in, you're listening to SmileTalk, I'm Salvador Gaytan here with Dr. John Chao, spelled C-H-A-O. You can reach Dr. John at 626-308-9104 or your website Dr. John?

Dr. John Chao:          AlhambraDental.com, or else you can also get me at ChaoRadio.com, C-H-A-O Radio dot com.

Salvador Gaytan:       Well, that's fabulous, you have two websites going into your main website.

Dr. John Chao:          Into the main website, so if you don't remember one, you can remember the other, but AlhambraDental.com is probably the easiest to remember.

Salvador Gaytan:       Well, different people remember different things, so AlhambraDental.com or ChaoRadio.com.

Dr. John Chao:          It kind of rhymes, C-H-A-O, R-A-D-I-O.

Salvador Gaytan:       That does rhyme, doesn't it.

Dr. John Chao:          O-O, ChaoRadio.com.

Salvador Gaytan:       I like it ladies and gentlemen.

Dr. John Chao:          We'd love to hear from you guys.

Salvador Gaytan:       Absolutely.

Dr. John Chao:          We do, and we'll continue to answer your emails.

Salvador Gaytan:       Now Dr. John, let's do the rundown? The interviews, the first interview that the audience is going to hear is going to be, which was my favorite, which was OASIS. It's a dry mouth rinse and spray.

That's going to be the first one, and very inexpensive. We don't know if it works, we don't endorse any of the products, but we're just giving the people information based on what the companies say.

Dr. John Chao:          If we talk about a product, it's because we find it interesting, and not because we are recommending it to our audience. You can try it if you want, and let's see whether you like it. If you have questions, you should check with your dentist or a physician before you use their product.

But I do want to mention that a lot of people do suffer from dry mouth. There are 500 commonly used drugs that have the side effect of producing dry mouth. Having dry mouth would increase the risk substantially for getting gum disease and cavities.

Dry mouth means what? Not enough saliva. Saliva is like blood to the body. Even if you lose a little bit of it, it can lead to development of diseases such as gum disease and decay.

So, it's important, if you have dry mouth, not to change your medication, talk to your physician, but take preventive methods such as using fluoride, such as using products such as OASIS.

Another product I should mention, it's quite popular, it's called Biotene, and that's also available in drugstores for people who have dry mouth. But feel free to use those products if you feel that you have a problem, and especially consult your dentist.

Salvador Gaytan:       And if you do try some of these products that we're talking about, and you have success with them, email Dr. John, let us know, and we'd like to keep abreast of what is working and what isn't.

Dr. John Chao:          That's a very good idea, Sal. Feel free to email us and tell us what your opinion is of these products if you use them.

Salvador Gaytan:       Now, another product that was interesting, that I actually got a chance to use, was the Antibacterial Toothbrush by Mouthwatchers. It has nanosilver in the bristles, and the gentleman said that the bristles are so much thinner that it actually acts like a floss and gets out more particles.

Dr. John Chao:          I will say like a floss, not floss, just to a certain extent.

Salvador Gaytan:       Not as effective, yeah exactly.

Dr. John Chao:          But it does seem to have an action that can actually go between the teeth a little bit more than normal toothbrushes, so we have to give them that.

Salvador Gaytan:       Yeah, and I did. In the middle of the convention, we went out to lunch, and the gentleman had given me a complimentary toothbrush. I did use it, it seemed fine, it did the job for me.

Dr. John Chao:          Did you use it? I told you it was sticking out of your pocket.

Salvador Gaytan:       It was in my pocket, then you reminded me, and so I gave a quick little brush, you know?

Dr. John Chao:          Like walking down the isle, you were brushing your teeth with that brush.

Salvador Gaytan:       I got a quick little brush, got some barnacles out, and I'm probably good for a year now.

Dr. John Chao:          Weren't you afraid that some of these attractive women over there would be looking at you, brushing your teeth walking down the isle?

[Laughter]

Salvador Gaytan:       Dr. John, I was called to duty and I did my job, okay? You know what I mean? That was the ticket. Now, another product that we interviewed was a whitening product, and it was called Venus White, and one of the things that they had in it was -- which we'll tell you about was Sensodyne, which I guess is for people that have sensitive gums.

But it's only an in-office treatment, so I don't know if -- you can contact your dentist if you want to use that one after you hear about it. Another product that we interviewed, which is very interesting, which was by Quantum, it was how to reduce and get rid of canker sores. They have a patch, as well as a mouthwash, so people will be hearing about that.

Dr. John Chao:          Yeah, on canker sores, there are lasers that can instantly remove the symptoms of canker sore within a minute or two. You wave this beam of laser around the cold sore, the crest will kind of dry up, and when it dries, the patient will immediately report having total disappearance of any pain or soreness.

Salvador Gaytan:       Alright, is that a service that you provide?

Dr. John Chao:          Yeah, I happen to have the laser that can do that.

Salvador Gaytan:       Dr. John, you have all the tools!

Dr. John Chao:          Yeah. Some of these medications are good, but they burn a little bit, so you have to be prepared for that. But they do work to a certain extent, and they do shorten the healing period sometimes.

Salvador Gaytan:       And if you're tuning in, you're listening to SmileTalk. I'm Salvador Gaytan here with Dr. John Chao, spelled C-H-A-O. You can reach Dr. John at 626-308-9104 or your website Dr. John.

Dr. John Chao:          ChaoRadio.com.

Salvador Gaytan:       Or AlhambraDental.com. Okay, moving on, we also interviewed another company, Salivary Diagnostics, and that's a very important product. It's about how to evaluate saliva for a lot of potential diseases and things, isn't it?

Dr. John Chao:          That's actively being researched, and that's an interview of a captain in the armed forces, who presented a study at the convention regarding the potential of saliva being a diagnostic tool for picking up systemic diseases.

Salvador Gaytan:       And the one thing he did say on there, that they do have a test right now for HIV that's already on the market.

Dr. John Chao:          Yeah. That's actually there already.

Salvador Gaytan:       An AIDS test. That's the genesis of our interviews. You're going to be hearing those, as we were there live. I'm sure you'll enjoy them. Then we will wrap it up at the end.

Dr. John Chao:          Okay, let's hear them.

[Interview recording - OASIS]

Salvador Gaytan:       I'm Salvador Gaytan, here at the CDA dental convention, here with…?

Dr. John Chao:          Dr. John Chao. We're having some fun with a couple of very attractive ladies, but they have apparently a very attractive product.

Salvador Gaytan:       That is right. They have an excellent new product called OASIS, and we are here with Heather Driggs and Carrie Finney. Did I pronounce that right?

Carrie Finney:            You did, thank you.

Salvador Gaytan:       Excellent, okay, let's go to Heather, she's going to tell us a little bit about her new product, OASIS, what exactly is it?

Heather Driggs:          OASIS is an over-the-counter oral moisturizing product for patients that are suffering from symptoms of a dry mouth. We have two products in the line currently; it is a mouth rinse and a mouth spray. Both of the products are available at retail, local grocery, CVS, Walgreen's, Rite-Aid and Kroger.

Basically, they are sugar free, alcohol free and gluten free products that are glycerin based to help with the side effects or symptoms of a dry mouth. The products can be used daily, they have a very safe pH level. They're very neutral products, glycerin based, and they have our patented polymer system, which traps water molecules into the mucosa.

Salvador Gaytan:       Now, Carrie, did she miss anything or did she get that right?

Carrie Finney:            The only thing that she could have missed is that we have an E-store, where you can actually buy our product in bundle packs where we offer a deeper discount than over the counter. In addition, we offer free shipping and handling.

Salvador Gaytan:       Free shipping and handling, what do you think about that, Dr. John?

Dr. John Chao:          Well, it sounds pretty good. How long does it last?

Heather Driggs:          The products are clinically proven to last for up to two hours based on the severity of the patient's symptoms. The mouth rinse, we recommend using as any other mouthwash in the morning and evening as part of the oral hygiene routine.

Then, the mouth spray is a really nice product, it's portable, it comes in a one ounce bottle, and it's sweetened with Xylitol, and it's more viscous. So, the products can actually be swallowed, and it's easy to use on the go or in the middle of the evening, when symptoms can sometimes be at their worst.

Salvador Gaytan:       And how much does it cost, Carrie?

Carrie Finney:            Back to Heather.

Heather Driggs:          At retail you can find the products. Most of the stores are carrying them bundled together, so you'll find the mouthwash and the mouth spray from anywhere between $12.99 and $13.99. Then, as Carrie said, you can order individual products through us or drugstore.com and Amazon.com, and they're usually available for about between $7 to $8 for the individual products.

Salvador Gaytan:       What do you think, Dr. John, any last questions?

Dr. John Chao:          Does it treat bad breath?

Heather Driggs:          The products both have a very mild mint flavor, which does help freshen the breath. The other thing that patients can do in order to purchase the product is we do have an online coupon available at our website, which is http://www.oasisdrymouth.com.

Salvador Gaytan:       That's a wrap.

[Interview recording ends]

Salvador Gaytan:       You've been listening to SmileTalk. I'm Salvador Gaytan here with Dr. John Chao, C-H-A-O. You've been listening to some of our live interviews from the California Dental Convention at the Anaheim Convention Center. You can reach Dr. John at 626-308-9104 or AlhambraDental.com, or what's your other website, Dr. John?

Dr. John Chao:          ChaoRadio.com, C-H-A-O R-A-D-I-O dot com.

Salvador Gaytan:       ChaoRadio.com, I love it. Okay, back to our next interview ladies and gentlemen.

[Interview Recording - Mouthwatchers Antibacterial Toothbrush]

Salvador Gaytan:       Hi, I'm Salvador Gaytan, and I'm here at the California Dental Association's big meeting, and I'm here with…?

Dr. John Chao:          Dr. John Chao, we're going to be talking about a new kind of toothbrush.

Salvador Gaytan:       That's right, a new kind of toothbrush made by Mouthwatchers, and it's an anti-bacterial brush that has some very interesting features. And I'm here with Tony Gallugi, how are you doing, Tony?

Tony Gallugi:             I'm doing just great. This show has been fantastic for us, the reception has been phenomenal. We have a product that is a patented product with floss-like action bristles with a nanosilver base that actually kills bacteria 99% on the brush.

Dr. John Chao:          Well, how does it do that?

Tony Gallugi:             It's very simple. The bacteria, after you hang up your brush after you brush your teeth, the silver repels the bacteria by 99%, and how it does it, it attacks the cell wall and respiration of the bacteria and kills it.

Salvador Gaytan:       And where can the people get it and how much does it cost?

Tony Gallugi:             They can get this through their local dentist, and they can get it at Whole Foods online, through Amazon.com, at our website at http://www.mouthwatchers.net.

John at 626-308-9104 or AlhambraDental.com or what's your other website, Dr. John?

Dr. John Chao:          ChaoRadio.com, C-H-A-O R-A-D-I-O dot com.

[Interview recording - Quantum]

Salvador Gaytan:       Okay, this is Salvador Gaytan here with SmileTalk, and we're here at the CDA dental convention, and I'm talking here with Becky from Quantum. Is that right?

Becky:                         Quantum. Yes, Quantum.

Salvador Gaytan:       Now, Becky, you have a very new product that takes away canker sores, cold sores in 24 hours, is that right?

Becky:                         A canker sore in 24 hours, a second product that heals a cold sore in four days on average.

Salvador Gaytan:       Okay, tell us about that product. It takes away the canker sore in 24 hours, what's it called?

Becky:                         It's called Canker Cover, and it's a small patch that adheres directly to a canker sore inside the mouth, softens into sort of a gel textured film, so it's like a band-aid over the sore. Then that dissolves over about eight to 12 hours. The canker sore, without using a second patch is generally gone within about 24 hours.

Salvador Gaytan:       Okay, and you have a second product, which is an ointment, isn't that right?

Becky:                         That's correct. It's called Lip Clear Lysine Ointment, and that one in a clinical study healed cold sores in four days. That was about the same time as both Abreva and Zovirax, we were slightly faster, we're talking about just hours.

But what's significant is, our product is about 1/9th the cost per dose of Abreva, and yet we were slightly faster than them in the clinical study.

Salvador Gaytan:       Okay, and what is the cost, and where can people pick up this product?

Becky:                         The suggested retail price for the Canker Cover is $9.99 for six patches, so it's about $1.66 to get rid of a canker sore in 24 hours. The Lip Clear Lysine Ointment is 7 grams retail, so right around $7. And CVS, Rite-Aid and Walgreen's carry them.

Salvador Gaytan:       Okay. Fantastic, you heard it first.

Dr. John Chao:          If we talk about a product, it's because we find it interesting, and not because we are recommending it to our audience. You can try it if you want, and let's see whether you like it. If you have questions, you should check with your dentist or a physician before you use their product.

Salvador Gaytan:       And you've been listening to SmileTalk, some of our interviews from the California Dental Convention at the Anaheim Convention Center

Dr. John Chao:          Please tune in next week for more episodes of our experiences on the convention floor.

Salvador Gaytan:       That is correct, and you can reach Dr. John Chao at 626-308-9104 or AlhambraDental.com or…?

Dr. John Chao:          ChaoRadio.com, C-H-A-O R-A-D-I-O dot com. Please feel free to email us.

Dr. John Chao:          Keep in touch.

Salvador Gaytan:       Goodbye everybody.

Dr. John Chao:          Bye.
